Rally for Clean Energy Jobs at the Pittsburgh G-20 Summit

On September 23rd, e2k and Events for Change produced a Rally for Clean Energy Jobs in conjunction with the G-20 Summit of world leaders in Pittsburgh. The two hour event was sponsored by Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, the Blue-Green Alliance and the United Steelworkers. The two hour event, held in the heart of Pittsburgh at Point State Park, features such speakers as: Pennsylvania Governor, Ed Rendell; Pittsburgh Mayor, Luke Ravenstahl; USW President, Leo Gerard; Sierra Club Executive Director, Carl Pope; AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka; the President of the National Wildlife Federation, Larry Schweiger; ER star, Gloria Reuben; Hip Hop Caucus head, Reverend Lennox Yearwood, and a video appearance by Al Gore. Interspersed between the speeches were musical performances by local bands, Grammy-award winner, Kathy Mattea, and rockers, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

This unique collection of speakers reflects a new coalition of labor and environmental groups that now see a common interest in the transition to a clean energy economy. Both groups, while still divided on certain social issues, have found common ground around the need for jobs and new industries that will reduce the emission of carbon that is causing global warming.

The Pittsburgh event presented many unique challenges due to the massive security effort surrounding the G-20 Summit. Large areas of downtown Pittsburgh were barricaded down on the evening of the event and all access to the city was closed at midnight. This greatly complicated the logistics of moving equipment and talent in and out of the event. Three days prior to the event the ACLU filed a suit on behalf of Code Pink to use our venue as a Free Speech Zone with a tent city and a teach-in, and earlier on the day of the event police were arresting Green Peace activists who had rappelled from the nearby bridge with a large banner. Add in a few well-timed thunder storms and over 100 media entities and you have an interesting few days in the world of global politics and climate activism.

The venue development and technical production for the event was handled by e2k Technical Director, Mike Brady; and Associate Producer, Danny Huebsch. The talent coordination and logistics were managed by Maria Giannini and Jeannine Sabo. The ticketing, credentials, and VIP hospitality was coordinated by Trisha Ricci. E2k worked with Chris Wayne and Associates to develop the event and coordinate the grassroots promotion campaign. The event greening was managed by Jaime Nack and the team from Three Squares, Inc. Jaime and her team oversaw the separation of all trash, recyclables and composted items, the food service operation and the carbon off-set calculations.
